Sunny is now 6 days old, and she's had many "firsts!" Her first walk in the BOB stroller (the coolest adventure tool ever) was on 6/15, when she was 4 days old, her first pediatrician appointment was on 6/15 when she was just 3 days 20 hrs old, and her first bath in the baby tub was on 6/16, when she was 4 days and 22 hrs old. Today @ at the age of 5 days 20 hrs was her first hammock nap—daddy showed her how it’s done! Yes, we count every hour of her age during this first week because she's changing so much right before our eyes! She can lift her head, turn to look in a new direction, and lay it back down. She likes to fondle her right ear/hair while her other (left) hand holds her left cheek and mouth. She extends her arms and legs all the way (watch out for self-launching right off your lap) and her eyes are wide open when she's awake.
She has the sweetest disposition--very resilient and mellow. But we had some serious feeding issues (no latch for nursing) for the first 4 days, and she lost a lot of weight. By the end of the 4th day, she began to cry hard, frustrated she couldn't "get" breastfeeding, when she was awake. It broke our hearts, but our doula, lactation consultant and great pediatrician saved us all from hunger and heartache. Now we have a feeding system (pumped breast milk in addition to "offering" her a breast) to fatten her up until we figure out nursing. Sunny's now happy almost all the time. She cries every 2 1/2 hours (to tell us she's hungry) and when we change her diaper. Otherwise, she's typically alert and wide-eyed, gazing into the distance with a blissed out expression, or fast asleep. What an angel baby!
Auntie Anya (our great friend from college) told us that Sunny was born on Kamehameha Day, a major celebration in Hawaii - very fun, and auspicious, too. So naturally, we'll need to throw a luau-birthday celebration next June 11th! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamehameha_Day Sunny also shares her birthday with her Uncle Scott, who’d hoped and hoped that her arrival would be timed “just right.”
